WF2007 Funds Raised
World Flight Australia will present a cheque for AUD16,000 to the RFDS at their 80th anniversary celebrations at Bankstown airport on May 18th 2008.

This is a record amount raised since the first WF in 2001. In 2007 WF Australia added another team from Hobart to the group and their fundraising efforts helped us achieve this record amount.

( 16:17 8/5/2008 )

2008...
Its been a few months... the teams have spent some time recovering from the hectic pace of last years event, and begun work on the program for 2008.

Stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks as details of the event are released!

( 14:58 2/3/2008 )

Commodores Black Tie Dinner
Its become a Worldflight tradition for the Commodore (Dave Palmer) to invite the crew to a black tie dinner in the Captains Lounge (the caravan).

The group dressed up as best we could (plastic ties are all the rage this year) and enjoyed a evening packed with culture and scintillating reparte.

The dinner was capped off with the traditional passing of the port, followed by a toast to Sim God in thanks for hosting and organising the event.

( 12:30 10/11/2007 )

Through the US to Caribbean
More great adventures as we headed down from the Great White North to the white sands of St Maarten.

Fantastic ATC in the US helped us into Miami and back on our way to St Maarten, which is now seeing more aircraft than it has probably ever had to cope with.

We are about to head across Central America, then into Western US, up through Canada to Alaska.

( 09:08 9/11/2007 )

Across the Pond
Well weve trekked through Europe, with some great traffic and ATC on the way.

Thanks again to the local ATC who continue to turn up and help with the event!

Were now in a long stream across the pond, heading for Gander and the US... WorldFlight rolls on!

( 13:55 8/11/2007 )

Amman
Weve arrived in Amman, where we have a longer layover to provide some opportunity for maintenance or to assist with getting back on schedule.

Again, weve had great cooperation from Local ATC as we travel around, and must especially thank the Russian controllers for their great efforts.

( 06:04 7/11/2007 )

Rollin through Russia
With some great support from local controllers and other pilots, the WorldFlight caravan continues through Russia to Yakutsk.

A few interesting numbers weve seen so far this flight; -66 Celcius at altitude, -25 Celcius at Yakutsk, and earlier in the day, 622 knots groundspeed - now THATS a tailwind!

edit: -71 Celcius now - crikey thats cold!

( 08:21 6/11/2007 )

Doin Laps at Davao
Well, thats the beauty of non-radar airspace! Currently QF25 is in a hold, slowly cirling and descending, as all the aircraft attempt to land at a non-radar field at the same time.
( 18:23 5/11/2007 )

Darwin to Davao
The freight train of flights is on the second leg to Davao - the stormy weather in Darwin was marched by the stormy connection for our ATC guys.

Fortunately some router juggling allowed the guys to get back online for departure, and, touch wood, the problem should be licked for good.

( 16:49 5/11/2007 )

Were Away!
A great turnout at Sydney for our first leg of Worldflight.

David and Dean have us on our way to Darwin, looking to arrive close to the scheduled time of 0310 UTC.

This sim is working well, and our telemetry is available from the live links - instruments should be up soon...

( 12:14 5/11/2007 )

Nearly Time
The Sims around the world are going through final configurations and checks as the start of Worldflight 2007 approaches.

2300 UTC on 4th November it kicks off - tune in for video and audio streaming of the flightdeck, current aircraft position and instrumentation datafeeds.

( 20:40 2/11/2007 )

The Count Down Begins
With just over a week to go before WF2007 commences we can report that we are ready to start with all planning, scheduling, provisioning and accommodation arrangements completed.

The simulator's scenery is being enhanced and upgraded by the addition of a new high performance computer with the latest state of the art graphics.

Start time at YSSY is November 4th at 2300hrs UTC (Monday 5th at 10:00am local time).

( 06:55 25/10/2007 )

Pilot Roster Released
The pilot roster for Worldflight Australia 2007 has now been released.

You can check out the Captain and First Officer for each of the legs via the "Operations" , "Pilot Roster" links in the menu above.

The Second Officer position is a non-flying role, and is staffed by members of the team with additional endosement on the sim systems. It is usually rostered closer to the event or as the flights occur.

I like the feelin I get...
As Worldflight 2007 gets closer, here you can view a short clip from last years event; Riding in a Jet
( 13:39 19/8/2007 )

Website Updates
Several updates to the website will be occuring over the next few days; we are loading up the flight schedules, adding downloads for you and updating pilot rosters.

Keep checking back for the latest on Worldflight Australia 2007

( 11:59 18/8/2007 )

World Flight Australia Expands
We are pleased to announce that a second Australian team, “World Flight Australia: Team 737”, will be joining World Flight 2007 which commences on November 5th.

The team will be flying a 737 fixed-base simulator in Hobart, which Nic D’Alessandro and Neil Brown are currently in the final stages of completing. They are officially supported by VOZ Virtual and will be seen in Virgin Blue livery.

A website will be available in a few weeks with links from here so watch this space for more information.

( 15:00 12/7/2007 )

Time to start counting sleeps
Today is the 7th of the 7th 2007 (Live Earth)

Four months out to Worldflight 2007. The simulator is off line for the next 3 months for maintenance and a few upgrades. Back on line in October for crew training and testing.

The route for 2007 is done and includes some interesting airports.

( 14:23 7/7/2007 )

We Are Home
Some delays in Brisbane as we waited for the last of the Worldflight teams (*cough* BA744) to arrive meant we were late departing.

This was compounded by a tech fault that saw an evacuation of the Sim on the tarmac before the leg was resumed and hand flown by Matt, with a pass under the Harbour Bridge, and a touch and go at Bankstown before landing in Sydney.

Thanks to the Hyway staff, Matt, and all those who contribute their time, software, and resources to make the event possible. And guess what... we are doing it again next year! See you then!

( 09:38 13/11/2006 )

The Oriental Express
Were passing through China at the moment, with lots of high elevation airfields, low temperatures, and exciting terrain to avoid.

Tristan is STILL slogging away on ATC, gettng the few flights who are still with us at this insane hour into the air.

Looking forward to an exciting day, passing through China and Japan, before turning south, over the foam, towards home.

( 07:47 11/11/2006 )

Instruments Alive
After some indeterminate problems, we have been able to get the live instruments back online, with help from hoppie (over in the UK with the UK worldflight team!)

For live instruments and other tracking tools visit the "Live!" link in the "Interact" menu.

( 07:25 10/11/2006 )

Deepest Darkest...
Africa. Down through Ethiopia, Uganda and Zimbabwe, were currently on track for Durban, South Africa.

Under local ATC again (thanks guys!) we departed a few minutes late due to a windshear triggered go-around. Fortunately it looks like the guys will make the time up in the air.

From Durban its across the Indian Ocean to Asia....

( 07:07 10/11/2006 )

..and on... and on...
We keep truckin. We have found our groove, and even the occasional goaround for windshear or delays on departure (due to the incredible amount of traffic wih us!) are not slowing us too much.

Weve had great ATC throughout Europe; the locals have turned out in force.

Such support is greatly appreciated - makes it all the more real. Thanks guys and girls!

( 09:56 9/11/2006 )

ATC all the way...
Thanks to the many local ATC and the guys in our ATC centre here at Worldflight HQ, we have had excellent ATC coverage throughout the event.

This year we are using the latest VRC controller software which allows our staff to have the most realistic emulation of an Australian ATC console ever seen on VATSIM.

For more information on our ATC services and VATSIM, visit this page

( 15:32 8/11/2006 )

Aruba, Jamaica...
Well, Aruba, Curacao anyway! We are continuing our journey through the Caribbean, and are currently parked at Curacao while Matt takes the opportunity to 'kick the tires' of the Sim.

Off to Bermuda next - oh its a tough life...

( 07:15 8/11/2006 )

Cubian Sunshine!!
WF611 has landed in Havana, Cuba! Due to ATC voice issues aircraft were being vectored left and right to get down in time and in sequence. The captain Dean said it 'looked fantastic from the left seat'. The turns were fun with the motion too!

Crew were last seen in a 50s Chevy downtown chasing women and top shelf cigars!

( 03:23 8/11/2006 )

Freezing in Canada!
The crew of WF607 have landed in Winnipeg after making good time from Calgary and put the schedule back on track. De-icing was needed in Calgary due to the minus 4 conditions. Good for the ski fields no doubt however!

Thanks to the local VATCAN controllers for staying on late and giving great ATC!

( 16:41 7/11/2006 )

Windshear
WF605 has had some fun - Windshear on short final resulted in a go-around... the guys are currently on their second approach and should be on the ground shortly.
( 11:35 7/11/2006 )

Worldflight in USA
Now at Tahoe - Reno, Worldflight is continueing on its way thorough North America, up to Portland then into Canada.

Thanks to all the local ATC who have come online to provide their services, we appreciate your support!

( 09:23 7/11/2006 )

24/7 Radio
As WF602 approaches top of descent into Honolulu, we are listening to IFC, a web radio station catering for the flight sim community.

IFC is following Worldflight, and is a one stop place to find out what all the teams are up to...

Check them out at IFCradio.info

( 22:22 6/11/2006 )

Ready again...
WF601 has landed safely in Nadi after an eventful flight.

Inflight turbulence resulted in a couple of engine flameouts until the flightcrew used the new overhead to turn on Continuous Ignition.

The motion made for an exciting approach, before the Commodore brought her down smoothly on the runway. Were in turnaround and will depart shortly, on schedule for WF602.

( 15:57 6/11/2006 )

And We Are Away
Worldflight Australia departed Sydney on time, and Captain Dave Palmer and First Officer Shannon Wells are in cruise on the first leg to Nadi.
( 11:51 6/11/2006 )

Worldflight 2006 now boarding!
The crew are receving their plan and briefing, and in less than an hour WF2006 takes to the air!
( 10:14 6/11/2006 )

Only a few days to go...
The team are making final adjustments to the simulator, setting up the ATC consoles, and preparing for what looks like the biggest event ever.

And we are doing it all for charity. All participants have made a sizable donation to the RFDS, and we ask you to join us in making whatever donation you can towards this Australian institution.

You can donate by buying virtual seats online using a credit card, cheque or direct debit. Click Here to donate now.

( 23:12 1/11/2006 )

Routine Maintenance
The Motion Platform was given a service today in preparation for the most work it has done in years.

All grease points were greased, the oil quantities and filters were checked and bolts re-torqued. The software was re-calibrated and the warning lights were cleaned as well.

In other news, the ATC stations are being unpacked and all the computers necessary to support WorldFlight are being prepared.

( 12:43 25/10/2006 )

In Full Swing
With a temporary visual system installed the Sim was given a full motion test with spectacular results. The sensation of motion was very real, particularly when under full breaking on the roll out.

Much more needs to be done to the visual system with work starting next week on the projection screen.

( 16:27 2/10/2006 )

Sim Comes Together
As Worldflight is about 6 weeks away, Matt, Roddez and an army of assistants have been working to update the sim and put it all back together for the event.

With some spectacular engineering challenges met, it looks to be an amazing event this year.

Well have periodic updates over the next few months, and more news on Worldflight 2006 as events warrant, so check back!

( 09:09 24/11/2005 )

Last Plane Into Sydneys Almost Gone...
The last flight of Worldflight Australia 2005 is about to kick off.

There are lots of controllers online, and lots of pilots in the skies...

As is tradition, Matt is the skipper on the last leg and Terry the FO; and Im sure they have something special planned for the arrival in Sydney!

( 20:18 13/11/2005 )

Traffic! Traffic!
We have experienced great levels of traffic around the world, and as usual, everyone has turnd out in force in Australia to join the Worldflight team on their journey home.

Thanks to all the pilots and controllers - it makes an amazing difference as we fight the frequency congestion in the sim, and follow other aircraft around on the ground and in the sky.

( 16:37 13/11/2005 )

Back in Australia
Touching down at Learmonth, Worldflight Australia has returned to home soil.

Currently the crew are on their way to Ayers Rock, and from there the sim heads to the East Coast, before the final return to Sydney later this evening.

( 07:54 13/11/2005 )

Across China
Were currently cruising over China, enroute from Chengdu to Hong Kong.

Wed like to thank the local controllers who have provided exceptional service; with so many aircraft flying the same routes it can really get messy, but as with many controllers we have encountered, they seemed to take it in their stride.

Thanks guys!

( 17:36 12/11/2005 )

Kathmandu
Ahh.. what a beautiful approach - dawn breaking around the aircraft, with the sharp peaks of the Himalayas all around, and clouds nestling in the valleys.

Clouds nestling in the valleys... hang on...! Certainly made for an exciting approach with visiblity less than 1000m...

From Kathmandu were off to China, and looking forward to finally using the metres button on the MCP.

( 13:00 12/11/2005 )

Thunderstorms!
QF25 and company have recently landed in Madras after departing the Maldives, however the flight was definately not uneventful

Shannon and Terry encounted severe turbulence and thunderstorms enroute resulting in autopilot disconnects and stick shaker alerts

And what better way to top off two consecutive captain legs in the early hours of the morning than to have a full ILS into Madras requiring a missed approach on the first attempt due to not breaking visual at the minimas!

( 09:11 12/11/2005 )

Sub Continental...
Its 3:45am Sydney time; the crew are currently in cruise, whiling away the hours until their arrival in Male.

Again, we have had some great local ATC through the middle east, and now Dave Palmer and Ryan Scott have taken the mantle providing Radio services over the dark ocean.

From Male, through nepal to China, Honk Kong, then down through Asia back to Australia, we are on the homeward stretch...

( 03:47 12/11/2005 )

In the Middle...
East that is... Weve left Europe behind and are traversing the desolate landscape that covers much of the Middle East.

We are travelling well; the integrated Flightdeck software by Jeppesen is very useful; as well as providing the global charts and enroute maps, it plots our current position on the approach and aerodrome charts...

Especially useful when the departing crew dont remember to tell the arriving crew where on the airfield they parked the aircraft!

( 22:12 11/11/2005 )

Website Back Up
Thanks to Ozflight, the web server upgrade is complete.

You will notice it copes a lot better with the load we experience during Worldflight!

Thanks to the Ozflight team!

( 19:38 11/11/2005 )

Rememberance Day
Flight 528 is scheduled to depart at 11:00am Sydney time, today, 11th November.

The crew will be delaying pushback to honour a minutes silence, in memory of all those who have died in all wars.

( 10:55 11/11/2005 )

ABC News onboard
Watchers of the webcam will see a *real* camera on the flightdeck.

The ABC, a national Australian TV and radio network, is running a story on their news service today about Worldflight, and are filming the departure from Innsbruck.

It is expected it will screen with the National news service at midday.

( 08:53 11/11/2005 )

European Odyssey
The Worldflight team have been passing through Europe the last couple of sectors, and what an experience it has been.

A large contingent of local ATC has looked after ourselves and the other flights on our sectors.

Thanks again to all the European controllers who never fail to come out in support fo Worldflight!

( 08:41 11/11/2005 )

Web Feeds Outage
The web feeds are back online again.

There may be a slight delay while some rerouting occurs at server ends, but both Webcam and instruments should be available in a few minutes.

( 07:13 11/11/2005 )

Controller Nightmares
The last 18 hours has been very busy online keeping ATC on their toes and the local ATC of Rob Terry & Shannon at Sim Central has helped with keeping a steady hand on the traffic

However Local ATC Amsterdam logged off after Scannos last landing and Funchai helped test the TCAS of many aircraft - all part of the fun!

( 05:46 11/11/2005 )

Some Sim Stats
During a turnaround Matt looked at the sim stats, and came across the following figures.

Of a total of 2470.25 hours;

The Autopilot was on for 1084 hours
The Autothrottles were on for 1172 hours
There were 3476 landings

( 20:28 10/11/2005 )

Ascension Island
Its nighttime mid Atlantic, but mid morning in Sydney as WF520 pulls up to the teminal on the lonely Ascension Island.

This morning the staff at Hyway cooked up our breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausages, toast and tomatoes... a great heart starter for the day!

The tech crew are poking around at the moment (i.e Matt is resetting the sim) in anticipation of our arrival into Europe.

( 10:09 10/11/2005 )

Fly Bys a plenty
QF25 has just landed in Buenos Aries after a brief fly by of local attractions

Thanks to the pilots whom have followed on the recent legs, crossing the Atlantic is not far away

( 00:34 10/11/2005 )

Server Problems
Server was down this morning for a couple of hours, Sorry We will also be down from 0600UTC to 1000UTC for about 1 hour for upgrade. Hope you are enjoying the show
( 11:08 9/11/2005 )

Scanno Pancakes Another
All the countless of hours or training have paid off for Captain Scanlan who broke an otherwise perfect safety record with a tailstrike on departure out of Panama. Investigation pending....
( 11:07 9/11/2005 )

Leaving USA
We have just left North America and are tracking to Kingston

thanks to the pilots who are flying along side us at the moment

and can we applaud the ATC of the last few hours

( 03:55 9/11/2005 )

Live Feeds? We Got em!
Webcam of the flightdeck with air traffic control audio. A LIVE display of the primary instruments in the sim.

We got em!

Select Interact - Live! from the menu above to access these and more!

( 23:15 8/11/2005 )

Aloha... and thanks!
Currently we are midway between Hawaii and San Francisco; with about an hour and 20 minutes left of the flight.

Thanks to the local ATC who have turned out to support the event, it really adds a uniqueness to the experience.

( 17:27 8/11/2005 )

Aloha
Weve just entered the airspace of Honalulu ARTCC, and a couple of locals have turned out to provide ATC services for our arrival.

Things are continuing well, with all flights on schedule or a fraction ahead of time.

We look forward to a break from the ocean views as we soon reach the Americas and some exciting sectors.

( 12:03 8/11/2005 )

A Sudden Noise
Somehow we always seem to encounter interesting weather during Worldflight - its either boiling hot days, or skies torn apart by thunderstorms at night.

Worldflight Headquaters is in the middle of the latter - phone lines are up and down like yoyos, so please bear with us...

Fortunately the flights continue unaffected; it was fine day when QF25 departed Apia a few minutes ago...

( 05:29 8/11/2005 )

The Long Quiet...
As we head into the wee small hours of our first night, Im watching Ed and Dave on the cockpit feed, while monitoring the instruments, and keeping track of their on time performance on the monitors.

Havnt we come a long way in a few years.

Incidentally, thanks to the Matt for popping in to do some ATC, we look forward to your return later this week!

( 00:46 8/11/2005 )

Live Instrument Displays
Thanks to Hoppie and Markus, we are now able to provide a feed of the primary flight instruments, live.

You will need to download a small piece of software, install and point it at the relay server.

Then you can watch the takeoffs, landings and other... ahem... exciting moments as the pilots see them! To get on board, select Interact -> Live! from the menu above.

( 21:07 7/11/2005 )

Awesome Auckland
The weather in Auckland is atrocious. Many pilots are going around due to the turbulance, windsheer and thunderstorms.

A late go around by QF25 due to windsheer saw them do another circuit; they considered a diversion until the controller advised them their alternate was looking worse...

A hard landing got them on the ground - the cabin crew will need to clean up some mess but well be ready for the next sector.

( 16:39 7/11/2005 )

First Flight Has Landed
After getting away on time, the first flight landed in Christchurch a few minutes early.

A serious windshear encounter on final woke the flight crew up, but they held it together for a great landing...

( 13:49 7/11/2005 )

Were Off!
Demand caused the website to crumble for a few minutes there, but things are coming back online now.

Rod and Gary have just left Sydney for Christchurch, the start of a week long adventure.

( 11:09 7/11/2005 )

Preflight Underway
The technical guys are on site running through some final checks on the sim and infrastructure.

It all kicks off at 00:00 UTC today!

( 07:37 7/11/2005 )

ATC Consoles Complete
Matt, Roddez and the team at Hyway have finished constructing the 3 ATC consoles to be used onsite during Worldflight.

The consoles are designed to emulate those used by Airservices Australia with TAAATS; The Australian Advanced Air Traffic System.

With the primary display, a touchscreen voice switching panel and an auxillary display for charts, these consoles are an amazing addition to Worldflight. For some pictures and discussion, visit the Forums via the Interact menu.

( 23:10 2/11/2005 )

Qantas Flight Catering in 2005
Qantas Flight Catering have followed on from their support in 2004 by agreeing to supply meals for the crew in 2005.

Supply of food and drink, for up to 15 people, for 7 days is obviously a big logistical task each year. Without the generousity and support of Qantas Flight Catering the event could not provide the funds it does to the RFDS.

Qantas supply breakfast ingredients, sandwiches, fruit and pre pre-packaged hot meals for the crew and support staff, as well as juice and water to help us through the warm spring days. Thanks guys!

( 18:03 1/3/2005 )

New for 2005
Each year we work to enhance the event, and 2005 will be no exception.

This year, we hope to expand the delivery of aircraft state information, as well as provide an enhanced ATC environment for the flight and those accompanying us.

Over the coming months we will keep you up to date as changes occur, and hope you will again dig deep and support the RFDS in 2005.

( 12:32 20/2/2005 )

Worldflight Australia supports UK
With the Australian Worldflight complete, some of the team are helping raise the profile of the UK event, joining them online on their flights through Australia.

Currently out of Brisbane, on their way to Auckland, the UK team is accompanied by Rob and Terry in the 744 sim, with Australian ATC by the VATPAC controllers.

Best wishes to Darren and the UK team with their event.

Thanks, see you soon!
With the conclusion of Worldflight Australia 2004, a special thanks to all who contributed with goods, services and most importantly the MONEY for the RFDS.

A couple of people we havnt mentioned , KNT544, HL3AB, and STV1059 who accompanied Worldflight on almost every leg, an amazing feat!

We will have more updates to the site in the coming weeks with a summary of our event this year, and all the details of Worldflight 2005 - stay tuned!

( 22:32 7/11/2004 )

Harbour Flyby
Matt Sheil brought QF25 screaming through the harbour for an approved flyby, neatly sliding the 747 UNDER the harbour bridge before pulling up and executing a barrel roll.

Followed by a flyby at 50 ft down runway 25, another roll, then and a return to land on 07.

A great end to a sucessful event and an exciting week.

( 20:45 7/11/2004 )

Final Flight of 2004...
Worldflight Australia has arrived in Adelaide, and is preparing for the final approach into Sydney.

Were looking forward to a busy time, and an exciting approach with Matt "Sim God" Sheil in the left seat.

As tradition dictates, Terry "Octopus" Scanlan will be FO, with Ed "Shorts" Parker filling the SO spot.

( 18:06 7/11/2004 )

The Home Run
NZ welcomed Worldflight with open arms, thanks go to the local controllers and pilots who turned out to join in.

Were now in Oceanic control with Brisbane Radio, on the way to Hobart, Australia.

( 12:43 7/11/2004 )

Sunday Morning...
and we are on the home stretch. Flight 437 to Auckland is currently looking at an on time arrival, and we look forward to the trip across the "ditch" back home.

Local ATC is up in New Zealand, and we are expecting a few controllers and a bit of traffic for the remaining sectors.

So please, sit back, relax, and enjoy the inflight entertainment.

( 09:26 7/11/2004 )

Inflight Movie...
The dedicated team at Worldflight Australia found they had some time on their hands Saturday evening during the long leg to Pago Pago.

Dave brought in a DVD which the team sat and watched in the dispatch area. For once the flight deck crew were a little envious of those outside the sim...

A little...

( 23:34 6/11/2004 )

A Qualified Operator
Will, a 744 SO has paid Worldflight a visit and is currently in the RHS chatting to the team as we progress on our flight to Tokyo. We departed slightly behind schedule, but are making good time and should be back on schedule for Guam.

The food has arrived from Qantas Flight Catering, and we are just sitting down for lunch; only 29 hours until we arrive back in Sydney...

( 13:18 6/11/2004 )

A Warm Russian Welcome
We have arrived in Petrapavlovsk; a beautiful daytime scene greeted the flight crew on descent as the navigated for visual final runway 34R, culminating with a beautiful smooth landing.

Were into our 6th day now, Matt Sheil is on the flightdeck for the next leg to Tokyo, continuing down through the Pacific to NZ, then home to Australia.

Check out the Live video feed; you can see the scheduled arrival and depature times in the Operations, Flight Schedule page.

( 11:29 6/11/2004 )

Oh! Canada! .. Again?
Well what a busy flight! WF430 Las Vegas to Vancouver, under the command of Captain Dave "Bombay" Palmer, together with 15, yes 15!, other aircraft flew to Canada.

Joe, Lapaz and Deano were kept busy separating all the aircraft, both inbound and outbound.

QF25 was sent around because of traffic and then debris on the runway, but Dave and Peter brought her back around for a nice landing. A little behind schedule because of that but we will make it up! Have no fear!

( 02:22 6/11/2004 )

Vegas Fly By
Capt. Rob "iceman" Hooley assisted by Deano and Scanno, completed a low level fly-by of the Las Vegas "Strip".

From all reports the passengers enjoyed it!

As a side note the crew did not use the autopilot for the 2h 40m flight .. a new record for WF!

( 02:11 6/11/2004 )

Returning to North America...
While visiting the guys at Worldflight, Brad, a Captain on the 737 with an NZ airline stepped into the left hand seat when the rostered captain was delayed.

Again, we saw the skill of the real world pilots who jump in and fly the sim the way it should be flown!

Joe Corrigan is back in the left seat, and the guys have settled back for the cruise...

( 15:50 5/11/2004 )

Ahh The Bahamas...
Its a balmy 21 degrees (celcius folks!) in Freeport today.

Worldflight 424 has just arrived, and is now boarding for the next leg, WF425 to St Maarten.

Matt Sheil, the owner and creator of the sim is flying this leg with James "La Paz" Lacey in the right seat.

( 00:05 5/11/2004 )

Worldflight Incidents...
...are not what they may appear... ;) On some legs, "Sim God" Sheil and his team of technicians insert failures and unusual environmental conditions for some of the crews.

Anyone can learn to fly an ILS relatively easily; flying it losing the autothrottle, losing up to 3 engines, in low visibility, without the flight director or with a Microsoft scenery malfunction provides a great challenge to the team.

After the landings, we analyse the results and all learn from the experiences; we all fly a lot better each year thanks to the challenges thrown at the team throughout the event.

( 17:49 4/11/2004 )

Oh! Canada!
We have arrived in North America; our firststop, Gander, Canada.

Rob Hooley and John Lucas stepped aside to allow Brent, an FO with the Australian airline Virgin Blue, to step up to the Captains seat and fly the arrival into Gander.

With autothrottle problems on final, and the real weather providing low cloud and low visibility, Brent had John handle the throttles while he brought the sim in for a great landing.

( 16:23 4/11/2004 )

Thankyou...
There are a couple of people not in Sydney with us this year who have put in a big effort assisting with systems and fundraising.

Martin Erdelen has been busy stirring up people around the world, encouraging many Europeans to buy virtual tickets assisting us greatly with the fundraising effort.

Jeroen Hoppenbrouwers has created many addons for the PS1 software, and specifically Matts sim. He is also providing the map images for all our web displays. Suffice to say the event wouldnt be the same without him. Thanks to both guys!

( 11:41 4/11/2004 )

Our European Adventure is Over
The crew have departed Belfast fro Sondre Stromfjord, ending one of the most exciting set of legs of the flight so far.

Excellent local ATC through Germany, Sweeden, Norway and Scotland as well as an abundance of traffic kept the crew working hard.

Thankyou to the European controllers who logged on to help us out.

( 09:51 4/11/2004 )

Ahh PS1 !! ...
The joys of PS1 and the offsets!

Capt Deano, landing on rwy 19R in Stockholm, nailed the PS1 centerline (other crew can confirm) but the offset was still stuck on rwy 19L!!! We can only wish of what may of been but can assure you all the passengers are safe and well.

Thanks to Martin for all the effort that went into WF418 - The crew and passengers loved it! Thanks also the for the ATC inbound and outbound!

( 04:06 4/11/2004 )

Excitement in Pisa
With John PC Davis and Peter Wyer at the helm, QF25 had an exciting time on the approach.

Instructed to go around once due traffic, the second approach also had to be abandoned due traffic on the runway (thanks SDY ;o) ).

The final approach tested the crew to the fullest; Engine 3 failure, follwed a minute pater by Engine 2, then Engine 1 at 100ft. The crew handled it with aplomb, bringing the Queen to a safe stop, and earning themselves a stiff drink!

( 21:44 3/11/2004 )

Entering Europe
Arriving in Larnaca, Worldflight Australia is entering European Airspace.

ATC was provided by local controllers in Greece as we departed for Pisa.

We look forward to more local controllers and pilots joining us as we continue through Europe tonight.

( 18:56 3/11/2004 )

Live Feeds Back Up!
Everything is back to normal! You missed a great circling approach by Mick Roberts into Asmara!
( 10:20 3/11/2004 )

So far so good
We have just arrived in Madagascar. Everything going well and to schedule so far!

We are just doing a routine reset of the Sim and Captain Jimmy Lacey will be taking us onwards to Nairobi very soon.

( 03:18 3/11/2004 )

WF408 Incident
Worldflight Australia can confirm that during WF408 (Mumbai to Colombo) an incident occurred on descent. Capt Rodney Redwin and his crew must be interviewed before we can make any further comment but they are no where to be found.

An official report is being developed and the investigation is continuing.

( 23:51 2/11/2004 )

Voice now streaming
We now have ATC streaming with the video feed.
( 14:45 2/11/2004 )

More Excitement!
The incident report from the crew of WF404 is in; apparently fuel remaining on landing was 0.7 tonne...!

Yes, thats tight; but of more interest is engines 2 and 3 flamed out due to fuel starvation on the rollout. Real Men dont Go Around - especially if there is no fuel!

Well, its all part of the fun - weve adjusted our fuel loads slightly on subsequent legs as we have been consistantly burning more fuel than planned.

( 11:04 2/11/2004 )

Always Exciting
Thunderstorms out of KL made the departure very exciting; an engine failure during climb caused the relief captain and FO some anxious moments, however a successful restart allowed the flight to continue.

More thunderstorms popped up enroute, with some bumpy moments as the flightcrew skirted the worst of the weather.

( 06:24 2/11/2004 )

Twas the first night of Worldflight...
...and the diehards remaining onsite are running slightly ahead of schedule.

Some of the crew have moved into crew rest, while others continue to provide ATC and support for future flights. Weve had our first Qantas Flight Catering meal - great food, with Icecreams for desert!

We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who are flying with us; it helps make the event more enjoyable to have the company in the skies! Thanks guys!

( 23:26 1/11/2004 )

2 legs down, 38 to go!
Were running to schedule, with both flights arriving early due to tailwinds and direct approaches.

The FO on WF402 declared he needed to change his cloths after a rather exciting takeoff, AND landing... unfortunately no-one pressed Record on the video so the exact details will remain with the flight crew.

( 17:49 1/11/2004 )

Worldflight 2004 Underway
Terry and Rodney have just departed Sydney on the first leg of Worldflight 2004.

The website was swamped with visitors causing us some initial problems, but our web host has fixed us all up and were back online.

Follow us via streaming video, the new Worldshow inflight monitor, as well as instrument displays and flightboard. Visit the Interact, Live! links from the menu.

( 11:37 1/11/2004 )

3 Hours to Pushback
Sydney is wet and overcast this morning as final checks are carried out prior to WF401 pushing back. The sim is flying a hold at 5000ft above YSSY as we carry out the final systems tests and check that the beer kegs are correctly pressurised.

Capt John Golin and FO Rodney Redwin depart for Townsville at 1130AEDT/0030GMT. They have confirmed that they are prepared to drink before midday. Just as well for them as they wouldnt be able to leave otherwise!

( 08:19 1/11/2004 )

24 Hours to Departure
Its a beautiful Spring day in in Sydney, and the crew of Worldflight 2004 are enjoying a restful day before a week of hectic activity.

In addition to actually flying the sim, many of the team will be occupied with other tasks to support the event, such as running despatch for the next flight, providing virtual ATC, preparing meals for team, publicity, maintaining the website etc.

It all starts 11:00am AEDT Monday 1st. Make a donation to the RFDS and join us on our week long journey.

( 11:22 31/10/2004 )

Systems Test
Less than a week to go, and the day was spent setting up and checking most of the systems for the event. Only a couple of niggling problems to resolve, then its all systems go for Worldflight Australia 2004.
( 17:17 27/10/2004 )

German PS1 Pilot Meeting to fly with us!
Joerg Loehnig and Jeroen "Hoppie" Hoppenbrouwers (former WF pilots) has advised us that the fifth annual German PS1 Pilot Meeting will coincide with Worldflight this year.

To celebrate this fact they will be flying with us on numerous legs during the last 3 days of our event. We look forward to seeing them on our journey and we thank them for their support!

( 00:05 25/10/2004 )

Qantas Flight Catering Help Out
We are pleased to announce the Qantas Flight Catering have generously agreed to provide meals for the crew of Worldflight Australia.

Catering is a major issue for the event organisers, and the support from Qantas really helps to ensure the viability of the fundraising event.

Thankyou Qantas Flight Catering.

( 10:28 1/10/2004 )

You can access the images via the "Interact", "Photos" link.

( 12:52 30/9/2004 )

PS1 Routes Available
Thanks to Ed Parker, the PS1 ROU and VIA files for all legs are available for download from the "Operations", "Downloads" page. PS1 users will also be able to download plans and loadsheets direct to their FMS during the event.

On the downloads page you will also find a PDF map of our route.

( 17:19 12/9/2004 )

Pilot Roster Online
The roster for Worldflight 2004 can now be accessed online via the "Operations", "Pilot Roster" links.

The roster may be subject to some changes, but will be continually updated online so check back for updates before, during and after the event.

( 17:05 8/9/2004 )

Worldflight 2004 Route
Details of the Route for Worldflight 2004 have been released.

Visit the Operations, Flight Schedule section of the site where you can view the schedule of flights over the seven days of the event.

Some highlights of this years event are sure to include Sondre Stromfjord, St Maarten and Baghdad. As the roster is completed, and the flightplans refined, more information will be updated.

( 23:03 1/9/2004 )

Worldflight 2004 Coming...
Preparations are underway for Worldflight 2004; routes finalised, rosters determined, and sponsorship sought!

We will shortly be updating this site with the routes and rosters, as well as information on how you can donate to help the RFDS, through direct donation or by buying a virtual ticket.

( 11:58 1/9/2004 )

Cheque Presentation-RFDS
Proceeds from the WF2003 Round The World Flight for the RFDS totalling $15,700 were presented to the RFDS at their Sydney Headquarters.

A letter of appreciation was sent to participants and supporters.

"Your donation is being used to help fund the purchase of a new aircraft, VH-MVJ. This King-Air aircraft is currently being fitted for aero-medical use and will commence service in the outback in August 2004.

( 21:17 10/6/2004 )

Flyby Sydney
Matt "SimGod" Sheil has just performed a flyby at Sydney runway 07 for the gathered crowds, before bringing QF25 home on the last leg of Worldflight Australia 2003.

Pulling up from the high speed transit, Matt rolled the 747-400 into a perfectly executed barrel roll, returning to straight and level for arrival into runway 34L

A great end to a great week, thanks to all who participated and helped out, and expecially to all those who donated. Hey, lets do this again next year!

( 18:23 9/11/2003 )

Party On...
We have touched down in Adelaide accompanied by international and local traffic, and some great local ATC.

An hour or so for the turnaround, then its off to Melbourne, followed by the final leg, back home to Sydney.

( 14:03 9/11/2003 )

Back in Australia...
Worldflight Australia is back on home soil, arriving early into Darwin.

There was some excitement as ATC advised the ILS was unavailable, and the crew were unable to tune the Darwin VOR for the VOR approach.

Captain LaPaz recovered to execute a smooth landing on runway 11 (pity bout the rollout) as "City of Veils" blared over the PA (apparently LaPazs band...)

( 08:04 9/11/2003 )

Asian Adventure
Worldflight has been passing through Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, and Manila, and is now off to Jakarta.

We have had some tremendous support with many pilots joining us enroute, including VATSIM5 and VATSIM6. The extra traffic and exciting weather saw us lose a few minutes on a couple of legs...

But we are again operating on schedule, and on the way to our last international destination, Bali, before reaching the shores of Australia again... for the run home.

( 23:38 8/11/2003 )

The Run Home
After the thrills of Europe we slowed the pace down a little. Three straight 4+ hr legs has meant most crew have been able to catch up on some much needed sleep.

We still have multiple aircraft travelling with us! We really appreciate it!

Now clear of India and setting course for China, Korea and beyond!

( 05:12 8/11/2003 )

Thanks Europe!
The Worldflight Australia team would like to thank VATEUR for the excellent ATC service we received throughout our transit through your region!

It was very busy! However everyone did an outstanding job on both sides of the radar screen and everything went like clock work!

At the moment we are clearing Turkish airspace and setting track for Muscat and the Middle East!

( 17:28 7/11/2003 )

Touchdown... Amsterdam
A smoooth landing on the new runway 18R at Schipol brought Hoppie and a virtual planeload of PS1 supporters to Amsterdam.

Thanks for the ongoing support, we hope you can join us on future legs of the journey.

( 08:09 7/11/2003 )

Worldflight 175 Underway
THe PS1 community has been very generous in supporting the Worldflight event, and have turned out in numbers to support one flight in particular.

Jeroen and Joerg are on the flightdeck for WF175, departing Heathrow for Amsterdam, with many pilots and ATC joining them.

So for those of you with boarding passes, sit back, relax, and enjoy the inflight entertainment.

( 06:53 7/11/2003 )

Amsterdam here we come!
We were overwhelmed by your support on our last few legs! We have had at least 5 aircraft following us since Tripoli! Including VH-WFA, QFA13, UA308 and STV1004.

We enjoyed full local ATC into Spain and France - thankyou very much VATEUR!

London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest and Anakara to come!

( 04:22 7/11/2003 )

Going Aroooooound
Capt Mick Roberts and FO Peter Wyer decided to get their moneys worth by executing a go around into Ndjamena :-)

Mick followed it up with a well judged landing in a 20 kt crosswind with what looked like a very high speed exit to the taxiway.

The sim is currently being reset by maintenance for the incoming crew and is scheduled to depart for Tripoli on time

( 17:47 6/11/2003 )

Continuing on schedule
Escorted by QF308 and VH-WFA, Capt Ed Parker and FO James Lacey made the trip south to Monrovia.

An excellent landing by Ed, in a tricky crosswind, provided the crew with another excuse to sink a few cold ones.

( 12:34 6/11/2003 )

Donations Continue...
As we cross the Atlantic, new donations have continued from VATSIM members in support of Worldflight Australia.

Thanks to those who have supported us so far, and Europe; were on our way... the link to Donate is on the left menu!

( 10:41 6/11/2003 )

After the longest leg of WF2003 - 6 hrs - Capt. John "PC" Davis and F/O Michael Roberts brought QF25 across the pond to Tenerife.

Despite the SO and assorted hangers on holding an Abba Gold party and hurling insults at the Skipper from the back of the flightdeck, Capt Davis put us safely on the ground ahead of schedule.

The crew are enjoying a couple of cold beers (at 730am) while maintenance prepare the aircraft for the next leg.

( 07:28 6/11/2003 )

Atlantic Crossing
We have arrived in Bermuda, and are turning the aircraft around for its next leg to Tenerife.

Thanks to the US and Canadian controllers who stayed online into the wee small hours to guide us through North America.

Its 0120 in Sydney, and while the rest of the city prepares to sleep, operations continue as normal zzzzzzzzzzzzz........

( 01:21 6/11/2003 )

New Photos Online
We have finally got around to posting some more still pictures.

On the left tab click on Photos of the Flight

( 20:11 5/11/2003 )

Matt Online
Matt Sheil, has finally departed on his first leg as Captain of WF165.

Leaving Minneapolis, the flightplan has them in cruise for only a few minutes before arrival in Winnipeg, where weather reports advise it is snowing.

From here, through Canada, then over to Africa - Worldflight rolls on...

( 16:12 5/11/2003 )

Stars and Stripes
The crew have left Dallas-Ft Worth for Minneapolis, and ATC have provided services for our amazingly professional arrival, and our subsequent departure.

There was a fuel crisis earlier today, but another gas cylinder was obtained for the keg and the pump pressure has been restored.

The crew are currently in cruise to Minneapolis, and our route then takes us into Canada where our Charity Flight collegues will soon start their Worldflight.

( 13:52 5/11/2003 )

USA here we come!
Captain Golin executed a by-the-book landing on one of the 14 runways at Dallas. Getting to the gate proved to be the biggest problem!

After ADSL cut out for over 30mins during the early morning we enjoyed yet another yummy hot breakfast.

We had quiet night in regards ATC and pilots following us - so please join us if you can!

( 12:13 5/11/2003 )

Our passage through South America
We had an enjoyable trip though Chiles airspace! We had local ATC all the way from Easter Island until well after departure from Santiago! Thanks guys!

Dinner was very nice once more with no one going hungry!

Captain James LaPaz Lacey is now guiding QF25 towards Lima, Peru. He was very tempted to divert to Lapaz and practise his high altitude landings but due to civil unrest he has decided against it!

( 00:04 5/11/2003 )

Virtual Medallion for Passengers
Martin Erdelen had generously "minted" some virtual commemorative medallions for those able to provide proof of donation to Worldflight.

Many European PS1.3 users have already contributed, joining as passengers on WF175, and we thank them for their genorosity.

You can find details at WF175 Memorabilia

Thanks Martin.

( 10:54 4/11/2003 )

Mmm... Breakfast
Terry Scanlan is whipping up a storm on the Barbeque. Eggs, bacon and sausages for breakfast!

This year, Gate Gourmet have provided up with the raw ingredients to allow us to cook up a treat each morning for breakfast.

On another note, people have been busy snapping shots around the HQ lately; we will upload some later today for your perusal.

( 07:56 4/11/2003 )

Bound For Tahiti
As they say in the adds.."Tahiti James". QF25 has departed NCRG for Tahiti and La Paz has his grass skirt on already.
( 04:32 4/11/2003 )

Web Cam Now Working
The Web Cam is now updating once again
( 04:03 4/11/2003 )

The Clear Pacific Night
We quickly passed by Noumea and Nadi! Apia and the coming sunrise cant come quick enough!

We enjoyed our first meal from Gate Gourmet tonight! We thank them once more for their support!

Everything running well so far! Stay Tunned for more....!

( 23:45 3/11/2003 )

Worldflight Webcam
Our webcam this year features night vision - even in the pitch black night, the cockpit appears as bright as day to the webcam.

So if you see the colours washed out, the flightdeck is dark, but this all seeing eye will give you a good view of all the action.

( 19:16 3/11/2003 )

First Flight On Time
WF151 has landed in Brisbane, on time! Accompanied by VATPAC ATC and other traffic, the flight was a good start to our long journey.

No technical problems occurred on the sector, and the next crew are aboard preparing for the first Pacific leg.

( 15:07 3/11/2003 )

Worldflight 2003 Under Way
In a few minutes QF25 leaves the gate in Sydney on the first leg of Worldflight Australia 2003.

Keep up to date online as we progress around the world, and join us by donating via the link on the menu to the left.
